Applying To Ontario Colleges And Universities - Information Sessions

The guidance department will be presenting information sessions for parents of graduating students on "Applying to Ontario Colleges and Universities." These will take place on parents night: Thursday, October 20, 2011 in the Unionville H.S. Library. There will be two sessions: 7:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. These sessions are appropriate for parents of students who will be applying to college or university this year.

Release of Information to OCAS/OUAC

There will be a one-time release of grades and other identifying information for all students in Grade 12 on October 6th, 2011 using secure transmission technology to the Ontario University Application Centre and the Ontario College Application Service in support and in anticipation of all post secondary applications. If you would like more information about this, please contact your assigned guidance counsellor.

University Application Meeting For Graduating Students

Graduating students will be attending university application process meetings on Wednesday, September 28th during Periods 1,2,4 or 5. The expectation is that students attend on their lunch or spare. Students who have classes during these periods may request permission from the teacher to attend. The presentations are 30-40 minutes in length. Students unable to attend may book an appointment with a counsellor to receive the information.


A representative from UBC will be in Room 219 during Period 5 on Tuesday, September 27. Graduating students and their parents are invited to attend this presentation.

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Parent Information Forums for families of students in grades 6,7,8,9 [amp] 10, will be taking place on Wednesday, January 5th, 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Unionville H.S. -Cafeteria.

Unionville High School offers a Specialist High Skills Major program in Arts [amp] Culture, however, this evening will also provide information on the many SHSM programs throughout the YRDSB.

These forums will help parents to support their children in Pathways planning for secondary school and beyond. Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs are offered at YRDSB secondary schools and are quickly expanding throughout the region. Students and parents will learn how students can take advantage of these vibrant and exciting programs with which they can customize their high school experience, explore new ways of learning and 'reach ahead' to their post-secondary destination of choice (apprenticeship, college, university or the workplace).

Trustees of the York Region District School Board have launched an extensive public consultation to gather ideas and comments about how to improve public education in York Region. Parents, staff members, school council members, students and other stakeholder groups are invited to provide input through a brief questionnaire.

This consultation process is aimed at identifying key priorities for improving student achievement; student well-being; delivery of education programs and effective use of resources. Information received from the consultation will be used to guide the Trustees' Multi-Year Plan, which will take the form of a series of overarching goals or statements of priority for education in York Region public schools.

Parents and other interested community members are encouraged to participate by visiting the Board website and accessing the questionnaire, located on the Board's homepage at www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca, between April 26th and May 14th.

Join administration and school council members from across the region in a series of workshops ranging from Youth and Mental Health to Safe Schools. See the link below for registration information.

Literacy Requirement:


Students are required to meet a literacy requirement in order to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students can meet this requirement by passing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test or by successfully completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (if the student is unsuccessful on the test).

Most students write this test in their grade 10 year, in the case of students who have entered school in Ontario after grade 10 or those who are in the beginning stages of learning English, the test can be written in the following school year or when deemed appropriate.

The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has scheduled the Literacy Test for
Thursday April 8th, 2010.
